National Lorry Week

19 Nov 20

As Britain remains in the throes of a second lockdown, the sixth annual National Lorry Week (16th – 22nd November) is proving to be the most poignant yet. HGV drivers have been absolutely indispensable during the COVID-19 pandemic - keeping supplies flowing to hospitals, supermarkets and homes.

MPs ranging from Jacob Rees-Mogg to Grant Shapps have expressed their gratitude for the haulage heroes who have helped carry the UK through the crisis. The Road Haulage Association are calling on the whole country to follow suit and show their appreciation for the sector’s tireless efforts, by shining a light from their doorstep or windows tonight to thank the essential industry.

“National Lorry Week provides the perfect opportunity for the nation to say ‘thank you’ to these unsung haulage heroes.

– Richard Burnett, Chief Executive RHA

Love the lorry

Despite the unprecedented nature of the pandemic, the industry persevered – ensuring that shop shelves were stocked with essential food items. The incredible pace in which hauliers managed to deliver beds, medical supplies and other equipment enabled the rapid construction of seven Nightingale hospitals.

“Ever since the start of the pandemic, road haulage has been the lifeblood of our economy. Everyone at some point has a relied on a HGV hero this year.”

– Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps

The virus has forced truckers to go above and beyond their station, whilst encountering unforeseen problems now synonymous with the ‘new normal’. On many occasions they have been denied access to toilet facilities and have been unable to buy food. Many roadside truck stops are still closed and motorway service areas are the only option. For those working in more rural areas this can prove difficult – it’s not easy finding somewhere to purchase a sandwich when your vehicle is over 52 feet in length.

Shine a light

The United Kingdom’s HGV drivers have, and always will, do an amazing job – however, they are often overlooked. People see the truck and often don’t consider the hardworking driver sitting behind the wheel.

It’s time for those that keep the industry on the road – the truck drivers, warehouse staff, managers, technicians, mechanics, fitters and so on – to finally receive the recognition that they deserve. Tonight at 8pm, the nation are being encouraged by the RHA to go out onto their doorsteps or at their windows to “shine a light” for the industry.

If you don’t have a torch, simply use your phone or turn your living room light on and off. How you do it doesn’t matter, as long as everyone comes together to support the sector! You can also share your messages of support via social media using the hashtags #ShineALight and #NationalLorryWeek.

“To each of our HGV heroes – thank you to the RHA and thank you to all of road transport; you’ve earned the gratitude of the whole nation and we applaud you today.”

– Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps
