FairFuelUK e-petition gathers pace
12 August 2011
A full parliamentary debate on fuel duty is moving closer to reality as the FairFuelUK e-petition has received over 22,000 signatures since its launch four days ago (6 August).
Under the government’s new e-petition initiative, if a petition receives 100,000 or more supporters, it will almost certainly be guaranteed a full debate in Parliament on the issue.
Sponsored by Tory MP Robert Halfon, the FairFuelUK petition calls on the government to scrap the planned 4ppl duty increases scheduled for January and August 2012 and to implement actions to bring down and stabilise fuel prices.
James Hookham, MD of policy and communications, at the Freight Transport Association says operators whose businesses hang in the balance are being forced to make some very tough decisions.
“Those that can't pass on their costs are in danger of falling into the abyss. High fuel taxes are doing massive damage to Britain's economy and if planned rises go ahead we will effectively be pricing ourselves off the road to recovery."
